High Flying Bird

UPDATED FEBRUARY 8, 2019

The latest project by Steven Soderbergh (director of films like Magic Mike & Ocean's 11) is now streaming on Netflix.

High Flying Bird, starring Andre Holland (Selma), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), and Melvin Gregg (UnREAL), is set during a pro basketball lockout and follows a sports agent (Holland) who pitches a rookie basketball client (Gregg) with an intriguing and controversial proposition.

Soderbergh regularly urges filmmaking outside of the studio system. It's no surprise that High Flying Bird was shot entirely on an iPhone 8 mostly utilizing a Moondog Labs Anamorphic Lens along with FiLMiC Pro.

In that same maverick mood, Soderbergh sounds excited about his first collaboration with Netflix.

According to Deadline:

Soderbergh said of the Netflix deal, “We had several strong options for distributing High Flying Bird, but to borrow the patois of the movie itself, this deal felt like a slam dunk and the perfect way for me to begin my relationship with Netflix as a director.” Netflix is planning a global rollout.
